The Importance of SPF

The Importance of SPF

Home | Blog | The Importance of SPF

When you think of sunscreen, you likely think of summertime: beaches, pools, tanlines and the like. However, SPF isn’t only for the hot months. It’s important to apply SPF year round. Here’s what you need to know to keep your skin safe all year long:

First, a little education:

There are three types of UV rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. The first two— UVA and UVB— are the two that cause sun damage and skin cancer.

UVA: These rays are longer and are what causes the skin to tan. Unfortunately, these rays also age skin cells and they are linked to damage such as wrinkles and some skin cancers. UVA sun damage can be sneaky. You may not feel any pain or discomfort, but your skin is still being damaged.

UVB: These rays are shorter and have slightly more energy than UVA rays. They are the rays that cause sunburns and are also thought to cause most skin cancers.

Since both cause damage, it’s important to protect against both. Remember— the sun may feel stronger when it’s hot out, but if you’re outdoors, you’re still catching rays.

Choosing a sunscreen

Unprotected sun exposure can cause wrinkles and fine lines, brown spots and dull, congested skin. SPF, or the Sun Protection Factor measures how well a sunscreen protects you from UVB rays.

For example, SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks 97% ,and  SPF 50 blocks 98%.

When it comes to specific types of sunscreen, your choice matters. There are two primary types— chemical and physical.

Chemical sunscreen absorbs into the skin and absorbs UV rays. If you’re the active type, this is the better choice for you. Not only do chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin quicker, chemical sunscreens are also water-resistant making them the ideal choice for swimmers or those who sweat easily.

Physical sunscreen, on the other hand, sits on top of the skin and reflects the sun’s rays. This type of sunscreen is ideal for those with rosacea, or sensitive skin. While physical sunscreens can be harder to blend into the skin, they tend to be more moisturizing.

Whichever you choose, make sure that it’s at least SPF 30, and be sure to regularly reapply if you plan on being in the sun for an extended period of time.

We may be stuck inside now, but start stocking up! During the month of April we’re offering 10% off Alastin Hydratint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen.
